Music as a Metaphor
Welcome at » 2008 » February

Four teenaged boys strolled onto the Rams Head stage, looking nervously across the crowd. One likely wouldn’t expect much musical talent or any charisma from a group of sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds, but the Columbia-based garage band, The Getaways, took that crowd by surprise, bringing an impressive blend of raw-yet-refined talent and a natural ability to keep the crowd moving even more than the guys, themselves, were. Maintaining a very tight instrumental sound, the band covered two songs by The Vines and The White Stripes, but the rest were completely original. Songs like “815″ channel the energy expected from music of the genre, but “Tonight” - a personal favorite - and “Fracture” bear a fierce, heavy tone delivered perfectly by Michael Altner’s strong voice and Austin McBride’s thundering drums. Guitarist Matt Higgins and bassist Brent McBride - the only one who carried genuine stage presence through the entire show - have clearly been playing music since they were in diapers, as they pulled the small, local band together with such extraordinary professionalism, making The Getaways a strikingly good band with a great sound. Five stars.
